Lucas di Grassi reaches for Formula E title
With the ‘best day’ of his Formula E career Lucas di Grassi has turned the tables in the title race of the electric racing series: following his triumph in Saturday’s event, the Brazilian from Team ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport is entering the last race of the season with an advantage of 18 points.

In the third Formula E season fans are again going to see a title decision in the last race: Lucas di Grassi or Sébastien Buemi – this question will be decided on 37 laps to be started in Montreal on Sunday afternoon. For the first time this season, di Grassi will be starting a race day as the leader of the standings. After his deficit to the title defender at some point during the season had been 43 points, he is now running in front.

“This has been the best day in my Formula E career so far. Thank you to my team and to everyone who never stopped working hard and believing in us,” di Grassi enthused after the race on Saturday. At noon the South American had clinched his third pole position this season and a few hours later celebrated a lights-to-flag victory on the 2.745-kilometre city street circuit that was never seriously at risk.

His teammate, Daniel Abt, was one of the dominant drivers in Canada as well. The German had started the race from position eleven, showed many spectacular overtaking manoeuvres and finished in fifth place. As a result, ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport has secured second place in the teams’ classification. “The race was great fun. I had a few tough but fair duels and was always in the thick of the action,” said Abt.

The finale of the season will start on Sunday at 4 PM local time (10 PM CEST) and be broadcast live on DMAX starting at 9:45 PM. “Congratulations to Lucas, Daniel and the whole team: they all delivered a perfect job today with a lot of pressure on their shoulders,” says Team Director Hans-Jürgen Abt. “But that was only part one. Tomorrow we intend to make an equally strong showing and will give our all to make our big dream of clinching the Formula E title come true.”

Lucas di Grassi is the champion of Formula E
A man has fulfilled his dreams: Lucas di Grassi from the ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport team has caused a sensation and secured the Formula E title in a thrilling season finale in Montreal.

The celebrations in the ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport pits were boundless when Lucas di Grassi crossed the finish line as the new Formula E champion after 37 laps. After finishing third and second overall in the first two years of the electro racing series, the Brazilian has now completed his great goal. The German team are also celebrating second place in the hard-fought Formula E team rankings.

“With this title, a dream has come true. Team, family, friends, fans – I could hug them all at once right now,” says Lucas di Grassi. “We’ve had three terrific years with many emotions and unforgettable moments, but today’s achievement is the absolute pinnacle and a deserved reward for our unique team morale and fighting spirit. I’m proud to be the champion of Formula E. Thank you to everyone who has made this possible.”

The 32-year-old Brazilian, who has lived in Monaco with his wife Bianca for ten years, was one of the founding fathers of the electro racing series: long before the first cars hit the track, he supported Alejandro Agag and his deputy, Alberto Longo, in the design and concept of Formula E and has since been one of its most prominent ambassadors. On 30 July 2017, he finally came full circle – another reason why this title is so special. There is hardly anyone in the paddock or the grandstands who is not pleased for Lucas di Grassi’s achievement.
The 2016/2017 season was a tough nut to crack for the new champion: it quickly became clear that the combination of title-defender Sébastien Buemi and the Renault factory team were always going to be difficult to beat. The Swiss driver’s lead had at one point grown to 43 points, but before the final races in Montreal, di Grassi had brought himself within striking distance with a ten-point deficit and now sits at the top of the table for the very first time this season – and at the perfect moment too.

“I’m incredibly happy. Today we were rewarded for never giving up,” says Team Principal Hans-Jürgen Abt. “This title for me is on par with the first DTM triumph in 2002. At that time we were the underdogs as well, and we caused a sensation that many hadn’t even imagined. My thanks go to Lucas, Daniel, the entire team, the partners and of course the fans: you have all shown what’s possible when you pull together and believe in one another.”
The finale in Montreal also marks the end of a small era in Formula E: ABT Sportsline is handing over its grid position to Audi, which is entering the series with a factory-backed commitment, pushing forward the development together with Schaeffler and will race under the name Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler. ABT Sportsline will remain as the supervising team. “Lucas’s title and our second place in the team rankings is a fantastic way to say goodbye to three splendid, exciting years. We are proud to have been one of the founding members of Formula E in 2014 and hopefully to have left behind a small legacy in the series.”

In the 33 Formula races of the first three years, ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport has taken a total of 24 podiums and is therefore the most successful team on the grid. Lucas di Grassi has won six times – including at Formula E’s debut in September 2014 in Beijing.

Daniel Abt wins Audi’s Selfie Challenge
Who will shoot the coolest selfie on a sightseeing tour of New York? Audi had asked this question a few weeks ago and accompanied Daniel Abt and Lucas di Grassi on their hunt for the best picture. The fans selected a picture taken by the German as their favourite so that his teammate, di Grassi, had to honour his bet of – thoroughly – cleaning Daniel Abt’s helmet.

Life raises countless questions but only gives few answers. These are sometimes surprisingly obvious, however. For example, the answer to the question of the perfect car for summer can only be ABT TT RS-R Roadster. After the fine-tuning by ABT Sportsline, the world's most powerful series ex factory five cylinder achieves a formidable 500 HP (368 kW) at 570 Nm, guaranteeing even greater driving pleasure and performance. The convertible's optimized motor management, combined with enhanced styling promises the Summer of your Life.

ABT Power R titillates a formidable additional 100 HP from the Audi TT RS's 2.5 petrol engine, allowing it to reach 100 km/h entire 0.5 seconds faster. "We always achieve the maximum in terms of performance of the engines," managing director Hans-Jürgen Abt stresses. "But never more than technically reasonable. Therefore, there is no risk to the vehicle, and our customers don't have to compromise to benefit from an ABT." The ABT TT RS-R Roadster has been given the right stainless steel exhaust system with double tailpipe trims, so that the sound really does do justice to the additional power.
Besides the technical improvements, numerous visual changes have been made out- and inside the vehicle. For example, add-ons made from carbon fibre enhance the exterior, giving the limited edition of 50 ABT TT RS-R a significantly more elegant and sportier look. Among other things a front spoiler, front flics and front blades have been added. The new, exclusive front grille frame with red TT RS-R lettering has also found its way into the model. Further details, such as the side skirt add-ons with side blades and the multi-part rear skirt, create consistent highlights. Finally, the 20-inch ABT SPORT GR wheels in "glossy black" with diamond machined flange are a clear indication that the ABT RR RS-R Roadster is no normal vehicle.

Refined seats with TT RS-R logo and numerous badges are now waiting in the inside, which points equally to the Roadster's exclusivity and origin. The ABT LED-door entrance lights have also found their way into the Audi and project the ABT TT RS-R logo onto the asphalt each time you open the door. Should the ABT TT RS-R Roadster's available equipment contrary to expectations fail to satisfy all demands, ABT Sportsline's extensive range of optional add-ons is available. For example, the catalog includes a leather and carbon interior as well as different rims or sports stabilizers. The experts at ABT Individual are on hand, who offer tailored handcrafted solutions for models that are absolutely unique.

For the worldwide leading technology corporation Schaeffler, Formula E is the perfect stage. Prof. Peter Gutzmer, the CTO at Schaeffler and the man responsible for the involvement in Formula E, says “everything to do with electro-mobility, including hybrid solutions and pure electric driving, will significantly influence the future – especially in the big metropolises of the world. For years, Schaeffler has been offering solutions and concepts for the mobility for tomorrow. Formula E is a key commitment for us and it’s ideal for our company and our engineers.”

Schaeffler, together with ABT Sportsline, is responsible for the entire powertrain – i.e. the electric motor and transmission with the rear chassis including the software and cabling. After the premiere season when the entire starter field consisted of identical cars, the regulators allowed the individual configuration and production of the powertrain for the second season. This is exactly the area in which Schaeffler’s technology expertise comes in use for the ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport team. In addition, the team has a free hand with rims, dampers and with the design and geometry of the suspension on the rear axle, as well as the enormously important software for the powertrain.
Schaeffler is known as a leader in innovation with a variety of technologies that make cars more economical, more environmentally friendly and safer, as well as with products for railways, airplanes, wind power turbines and for many other industrial sectors. Schaeffler is present wherever anything moves. And movement also means mobility. The challenges of mobility of the future are great. That is why Schaeffler has committed itself to the integral strategy concept ‘mobility for tomorrow’ in order to find sustainable solutions for tomorrow’s world.

A spectacular mark against climate change
With an unprecedented event, Formula E, Schaeffler and Lucas di Grassi have set a mark against global warming. The Brazilian drove a few laps on a glacier in Greenland in his Formula E car.

“Global warming is an issue that affects us. Electro-mobility can and will continue to play an important role in the fight against climate change in the future,” says CTO Prof. Peter Gutzmer. “We see Formula E with its innovations and new ideas as a driving force for the mobility of the future, and that’s why we are happy to support this spectacular action.”
In cooperation with the Greenland government, environmental activists and other partners such as the Prince Albert Foundation and the University of Southampton, the event was planned long-term and carefully, and implemented with the least possible expenditure. The project resulted in some impressive images, worldwide interest with around three million views on YouTube alone, as well as a 48-minute documentary, which was shown at the race in Marrakesh at the same time as the international climate conference ‘COP22’.

“The area in Greenland is such a peaceful place. I was frightened to see how the landscape was changing through global warming,” says Lucas di Grassi. “This experience gives me a whole new perspective of what kind of challenges lie ahead of us and what contribution Formula E can make.”
Next stop: Hong Kong
Formula E is now taking its summer break. Next up are pre-season tests which Team Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler will be performing in Germany and Spain before the fourth season kicks off in Hong Kong with two races on 2 and 3 December.
